Eternal God, eternal Trinity,
You have made the Blood of Christ so precious
through His sharing in Your Divine nature.
You are a mystery as deep as the sea;
the more I search, the more I find,
and the more I find, the more I search for You.
But I can never be satisfied;
what I receive will ever leave me desiring more.
When You fill my soul, I have an ever greater hunger,
and I grow more famished for Your light.

O admirable Saint Catherine, thou who didst merit to make of thy whole life the noblest holocaust, constantly inspiring thyself to a most ardent love for Jesus, the Lamb without blemish, and for His beloved Spouse the Church, whose rights thou didst strenuously affirm and support in troubled times, obtain, likewise, for us the grace not only to pass unscathed through the corruption of this world, but also to remain unshakably faithful to the Church, in word, in deed, in example, to see always, and to make others see, in the Vicar of Christ our anchor, as it were, in the storms of life, the beacon light that points the way to the harbor of safety in the dark night of our times and of men’s souls. Amen.

Saint Catherine of Siena, Patron Saint of Italy, Nurses, Fire Protection

Saint Catherine of Siena is one of the most significant saints in the Catholic Church, known not only for her deep spirituality but also for her wide range of patronages. She is the patron saint of Italy, sharing this honor with Francis of Assisi. Her influence extended far beyond her homeland, as she played an important role in advising church leaders and promoting unity during a turbulent period in Church history. Because of her courage in speaking out and her dedication to reform, she is seen as a symbol of strong faith and moral leadership.

In addition to her national and continental patronages, St Catherine is also associated with several specific groups and causes. She is the patron saint of nurses, largely because of her compassionate care for the sick, especially during times of plague when many others fled. Her willingness to serve the ill and dying demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness. For similar reasons, she is also considered a patron saint of those who are sick or suffering from illness. Furthermore, she is invoked as a protector against fire, and as a patron for people who are ridiculed for their faith or who struggle with temptation. Saint Catherine of Siena was beatified on 29 December 1460 and canonized on 29 June 1461. Her feast day is 30th April.
