Early Life and Family Background

Saint Rita was born Margherita Lotti in 1381 in the town of Roccaporena, near Cascia, in Italy. She was born into a devout Christian family, known for their piety and generosity. From an early age, Rita exhibited a strong desire for prayer and devotion to God, often spending long hours in contemplation and attending Mass daily.

At the age of twelve, despite her pious inclinations, Rita's parents arranged her marriage to Paolo Mancini, a man known for his violent temper and involvement in feuds. Rita obeyed her parents' wishes and entered into marriage, trusting that God would guide her path.

Marriage and Family Life

Rita faced significant challenges in her marriage to Paolo. His abusive behavior and involvement in local conflicts caused Rita great distress. Despite these difficulties, Rita remained steadfast in her faith and prayed fervently for her husband's conversion and for peace in their household.

After eighteen years of marriage, Paolo's heart was softened by Rita's patience and prayers. He repented of his past actions and sought reconciliation with those he had wronged. This transformation was a testament to Rita's unwavering faith and her belief in the power of prayer and forgiveness.

Widowhood and Religious Calling

Tragically, Rita's husband Paolo was murdered as a result of his past conflicts. Rita forgave his killers, displaying a remarkable spirit of forgiveness and compassion. Left widowed and with two sons, Rita focused her attention on raising her children in the Christian faith, instilling in them the values of mercy, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

Rita's sons, influenced by their mother's faith and example, eventually renounced their desire for vengeance and pursued paths of peace and reconciliation. They entered religious life, joining the Augustinian community, which deeply impressed Rita.

Entry into the Augustinian Order

With her sons established in the Augustinian monastery, Rita felt a calling to dedicate herself more fully to God through religious life. However, she faced initial resistance from the convent due to her status as a widow and her previous married life. Undeterred, Rita persisted in her desire to join the community.

According to tradition, Rita experienced a miraculous intervention that facilitated her entry into the convent. Saint John the Baptist, Saint Augustine, and Saint Nicholas of Tolentino appeared to Rita, escorting her to the convent where she was warmly welcomed by the sisters. This miraculous occurrence underscored Rita's chosen path and affirmed her vocation to a life of prayer, penance, and service.

Life as a Religious and Mystic

As a member of the Augustinian community, Rita immersed herself in a life of prayer, penance, and contemplation. She dedicated herself to the practice of the virtues of poverty, chastity, and obedience, seeking union with God through self-denial and humility. Rita's deep spirituality and mystical experiences, including visions and ecstasies, enriched her prayer life and strengthened her resolve to live in accordance with God's will.

Rita's reputation for holiness and wisdom spread throughout the region, drawing many people seeking her counsel and prayers. She became known as a peacemaker and a healer, interceding for those in need and offering spiritual guidance to individuals facing moral and personal challenges.

Miracles and Patronage

Saint Rita's life was marked by numerous miraculous occurrences attributed to her intercession. One of the most famous miracles associated with her is the healing of a chronic wound on her forehead, believed to have been caused by a thorn from Christ's crown of thorns, which appeared miraculously and caused Rita great suffering. This wound, which emitted a fragrance and led to her being known as the "Saint of the Impossible," was reportedly healed at her death.

Saint Rita is venerated as the patron saint of impossible causes, difficult marriages, and abused women. Many believers continue to seek her intercession for healing, reconciliation, and guidance in times of distress and despair.

Death and Canonization

Saint Rita died on May 22, 1457, at the age of seventy-six. Her death was preceded by a final mystical experience in which she received a vision of Christ and His mother Mary welcoming her into eternal life. Rita's body, incorrupt and emitting a sweet fragrance, became an object of veneration and pilgrimage soon after her death.

Rita was beatified by Pope Urban VIII in 1628 and canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1900. Her feast day is celebrated on May 22nd each year, commemorating her life of holiness, virtue, and profound devotion to God. Saint Rita's canonization recognized her as a model of sanctity and an intercessor for those facing seemingly insurmountable challenges and hardships.

St. Rita Novena 5

O Holy Patroness of those in need, St. Rita, whose pleadings before thy Divine Lord are almost irresistible, who for thy lavishness in granting favors hast been called the Advocate of the hopeless and even of the impossible; St. Rita, so humble, so pure, so mortified, so patient and of such compassionate love for the Crucified Jesus that thou couldst obtain from Him whatsoever thou askest, on account of which all confidently have recourse to thee, expecting, if not always relief, at least comfort; be propitious to our petition, showing thy power with God on behalf of thy suppliant; be lavish to us, as thou hast been in so many wonderful cases, for the greater glory of God, for the spreading of thine own devotion, and for the consolation of those who trust in thee. We promise, if our petition is granted, to glorify thee by making known thy favor, to bless and sing thy praises forever. Relying then upon thy merits and power before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we pray thee grant that (here mention your request).
